Free Advice:
We have made our pricing accessible. But we understand
some young businesses running on a very short budget
would need to implement some level of security to their
systems without expense. That is possible. Windows
operating systems from XP SP2 and up provide thru GPO or
by the deployment of the following registry key write
protection for USB storage devices.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
WriteProtect dword value = "1" ( for write protect) or
WriteProtect dword value = 0 (to allow to extract data
from the PC to the USB)
CEO comments.
Be aware that some software solutions might want to
"sell " you "WriteProtect option as "Read Only"
misleading term. (option you already acquired with your
Windows license)
Read only would mean that any data/code on the USB can
only be read (remember Microsoft says write protect NOT
read only)
We consider that read only term is sometimes -
misleading, misused or misunderstood due to the fact
that data/code from the device can be executed also on
the PC not only read.
We think that unless you have an airtight network with
permission restriction across the board - (no longer
common practice on fast growing organizations) and have
follow comprehensive Microsoft information on GPO. You
should not relay on the above mentioned methods because
the methodology used now being widely spread over the
internet.
The fact is that unless the network is airtight
permission wise - generic code venerates the "security
state" could be entered by means of the same "read only"
USB device that will finally steal (extract) the
information from the PC.
Now with the upcoming of U3 technology that allows the
auto execution of the USB device this becomes more of a
concern.
We are confident that soon compliance regulation will
recommend completely blocking the USB storage devices
and only allow specific devices to function as our
products do. (we think these recommendation for
financial organizations or any organization that holds
third party information should go further recommending
the company owns the allowed devices) And will also
include the recommendation to monitor what's extracted
from the pre-approved devices as our product USB Aware
(add-on) does.
Therefore our products do not offer "read only" for USB
storage as front protection option - of course our
software utilizes as backup all means available to
finally achieve its primary goal. Protecting your data
assets.
